The journey of a thousand miles begins with
one step.

I’m in terrible shape, so even if I wasn’t overweight,
and I most certainly am, I’d still need to do something to get into shape. And
by shape, I don’t mean I need to run a marathon or a 3 minute mile, I just mean
getting up from the floor should not be cause for heavy breathing. I have low
standards and still don’t meet them.
Looking online there are plenty of ideas of how to
transform your body through exercise in 6 weeks (time varies but point is still
there). But to begin, I need something free or really cheap and doable by my
chubby, extremely sedentary self. So I’ve decided to go with walking. I
actually have a pedometer that just needs a new battery. A pedometer isn’t
necessary but it’ll be an easy way for me to measure progress. Can’t cheat or
fake it. Well I could because I can outsmart inanimate objects usually, but I
won’t be attempting to do that.
I’m going to go with 10,000 steps per day because it is
simple and something we’ve all heard. Now the length of time to do this
experiment is more of a question. I’ve been debating it and currently I’m
leaning towards 4 weeks. I’m thinking that is probably going to be my default
time frame when the experiment doesn’t come with an obvious time frame.
If I didn’t have a pedometer, I read an article that
stated that 10,000 steps at a moderate pace takes 100 minutes and at an intense
pace 77 minutes. So that could be used to judge the number of steps taken.
Also, since I initially started this post (I’m doing some
writing in advance), I have replaced my pedometer battery. In fact, I’m
currently wearing the pedometer in order to get a baseline of how many steps I
currently take daily. It isn’t many. Shamefully so. But I’ll save that info
along with my beginning weight for when I actually start the 10,000 step
experiment.
